HighTest Lite (tm)
User's Guide
Notice
HighTest Lite (tm) includes a complete help system that
includes all of the information usually found in a
separate "User's Guide". This document presents
information included in that program that warrants
repeating.

1. What is HighTest Lite?
---------------------------------------------------------
HighTest Lite, along with its companion products --
HighTest and HighTest Plus, is the first commercially-
available 32-bit PC benchmark test that are compatible
with the MS-DOS operating system.
HighTest products provides PC manufacturers, dealers
and end-users with the first reliable, accurate,
documented, and easy-to-use MIPS tests for all IBM and
compatible PC's and workstations. HighTest Lite includes
CPU detection logic that will run the appropriate tests -
- MIPS*16 and/or MIPS*32 -- and then displays a color bar
chart along with test result data.
2. Why Use MIPS Tests?
---------------------------------------------------------
As explained in the help section of the program (by
pressing the F1 key), the term MIPS has been around for a
long time. HighTest Lite and other HighTest products
are, in part, an attempt to bring new meaning to the term
MIPS.
Many computer professionals have been using the term
for years because so many people need a simple,
convenient method for discussing computer performance,
especially CPU/memory performance. Despite criticism from
some computer users regarding the lack of a standard
definition of the term "MIPS", the use of the term has
continued even in the midst of new attempts to
standardize computer performance methodologies.
Contrary to current, complicated approaches to
benchmarking computer performance, the HighTest approach
is simple. Instead of discarding the term MIPS, why not
put meaning into it? It is for this reason that HighTest
Lite, and all HighTest products, include the first
commercially-available 32-bit MIPS test for DOS-based
PC's and workstations. The MIPS*32 test, as well as the
MIPS*16 test, is based upon widely accepted industry
CPU/memory testing methodologies that rely upon the
general purpose Dhrystone test to produce reliable,
accurate and general purpose MIPS tests.
3. Why MIPS*16 and MIPS*32 Tests?
---------------------------------------------------------
Because modern PC use modern CPU's like the 32-bit
Intel 80386 and i486 processors. Since the PC market
includes millions of systems with CPU's that can run only
16-bit software as well as millions that can run both 16-
bit and modern 32-bit software, there is a need for both
16-bit and 32-bit MIPS tests, both of which must be
reliable and accurate.
Intelligent Devices' MIPS*16 and MIPS*32 tests
provide the needed benchmarks for the PC community.
Combined with the user interface and testing environment,
these MIPS tests provide you with essential benchmark
features:
- 16 and 32-bit MIPS tests
- Reliable and accurate test procedures
- Documented test algorithms
- Easy-to-use user interface
- Interesting test result displays
- Attractive licensing programs for all users
4. Installing HighTest Lite
---------------------------------------------------------
You can run HighTest Lite from either a floppy or
hard drive. If you run rom a floppy drive, you must
install HighTest Lite onto a 3-1/4" 720Kb, a 5-1/4" 1.2Mb
or a 3-1/4" 1.44Mb floppy diskette. If you install it on
a hard drive, you must have at least 460Kb of disk space
available for all HighTest Lite files.
To install HighTest Lite, type
PKUNZIP source_drive:HTLITE destination_drive/path
where source_drive can be any floppy disk drive and
destination_drive can be any disk drive and path. For
example,
PKUNZIP A: C:\HIGHTEST
will install HighTest Lite from floppy drive A to hard
drive B in a directory name HIGHTEST. BE SURE AND
INCLUDE THE COLONS AFTER EACH DRIVE LETTER! If you type
PKUNZIP A: B:
all files will be installed on a diskette in drive B.
5. Running HighTest Lite
---------------------------------------------------------
a. Change your default drive and directory to the
drive and directory where HighTest Lite was
installed.
REMEMBER TO DELETE ALL HIGHTEST LITE FILES FROM
THAT DIRECTORY WHEN YOU ARE DONE BECAUSE YOU
CANNOT COPY HIGHTEST ONTO MORE THAN ONE PC AT A
TIME. TO DO SO WILL BREACH YOUR LICENSE
AGREEMENT FOR USING HIGHTEST LITE.
b. Make a "vanilla" system. Although HighTest Lite
will run on most systems that also are using
expanded memory such as EMM386, QEMM or 386Max,
we recommend that any expanded memory be removed
before testing because it can cause test results
to vary slightly to significantly.
To prepare a system, remove all TSR (memory
resident) programs and special device drivers
that might in any way conflict with HighTest
handling of real mode and protected interrupts.
The most reliable way to do this is as follows:
If the system to be tested does NOT have expanded
memory installed (like EMM386, QEMM or 386Max),
then go to step "c" now.
If the system to be tested DOES have expanded
memory installed, then if the system is NOT
using disk compression software or other special
critical TSR's or drivers, backup the AUTOEXEC.BAT
and CONFIG.SYS files to file names that aren't
already being used, delete the AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS files, reboot the system and go to
step "c" below.
If the system to be tested DOES have expanded
memory installed, then if the system IS using
disk compression software or other special
critical TSR's or drivers, then backup the
AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files to file names
that aren't already being used, edit out all
TSR's and device drivers from the AUTOEXEC.BAT
and CONFIG.SYS files, reboot the system and
go to step "c" below.
NOTE: IF YOU ARE RUNNING HIGHTEST LITE ON AN 80386
OR LATER PC, THE SYSTEM MUST HAVE AT LEAST 1MB OF
EXTENDED MEMORY INSTALLED AND AVAILABLE. IF
HIMEM.SYS IS INSTALLED, YOU CAN PROBABLY CONTINUE
RUNNING HIGHTEST LITE WITHOUT REMOVING IT FROM
THE SYSTEM BEFORE TESTING. A warning message about
this will be displayed if HIMEM.SYS is installed.
c. Run HighTest Lite by typing HTLITE. Note that
some file I/O will go on as test files are loaded
and reloaded during the calibration and test
phases.
d. Record the test result data.
e. Restore the system. Rename the files
AUTOEX&&.HTL and CONFIG&&.HTL to AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS respectively. You can use the batch
file RESTORE.BAT for this purpose.
That's all there is to it. A simple, reliable
procedure for obtaining accurate, meaningful performance
data for any IBM or compatible PC.
